Kent, the Garden of england, a shorT distance from london

Canterbury, White Cliffs of Dover & Leeds Castle

Sir Winston Churchill's Home - Chartwell, Historic Tenterden and the Weald of Kent

Canterbury, Dover Castle & Historic Kent Villages

Step back in time with our guided walking tour through the medieval lanes of historic Canterbury. Wander past charming timber-framed buildings and discover landmarks such as Westgate Tower, the iconic Crooked House, and the Marlowe Theatre. Along the way, see the setting that inspired The Canterbury Tales before arriving at the magnificent Canterbury Cathedral, where you’ll have time to explore this UNESCO World Heritage treasure at your own pace.

From Canterbury, we’ll enjoy a short, scenic drive to Dover Castle, perched high above the English Channel. On a clear day, you may even catch a glimpse of France across the water. The journey continues along the dramatic coastal road, revealing breathtaking views of the White Cliffs of Dover—a truly classic English panorama.

Next, we visit one of England’s most enchanting fortresses, Leeds Castle. Often called “the loveliest castle in the world,” Leeds has stood for more than 900 years, evolving from a Norman stronghold into a royal residence for six English queens. It was transformed by King Edward I and later Henry VIII, and lovingly restored in the 20th century by Lady Olive Baillie, an Anglo-American heiress who turned it into an elegant countryside retreat.

For lunch, relax at a traditional English pub and enjoy classic pub grub and a pint, or choose to dine at one of the cafés within Leeds Castle’s beautiful grounds—the choice is yours.

Canterbury, Dover Castle & Historic Kent Villages

We start with our walking tour through the medieval lanes of historic Canterbury. On the tour we visit the Westgate Tower, the Crooked House, Marlowe Theatre and the scene of the Canterbury Tales. At the end of the tour we will arrive at Canterbury Cathedral. There will be time for you to do a tour of the Cathedral.

Dover Castle was founded in the 11th century by Henry II on the site of a Norman fortification built by William the Conquerer in 1066. Often referred to as the ‘Key to England’ due to its strategic location as the closest point to mainland Europe and France. We will tour the castle, the keep and learn about the castles role in the Dunkirk rescue of 1940.

Around Canterbury are some of the most scenic Kent villages, often dating back almost 1000 years. Godmersham, Elham and Chilham are some of the most notable. They feature beautiful village squares, ancient timber framed houses and lots of local shops, pubs and churches. We can take a trip to one or more of these villages and spend some time walking the streets.

Sir Winston Churchill's Home - Chartwell, Historic Tenterden and the Weald of Kent

We will start with a walking tour of the ancient Kent town of Tenterden.  Dating back to around 740 AD, Tenterden now features an extensive High Street of independent shops, cafes and pubs. St. Mildred's church features some of the best stained glass in southern England. The Kent & Sussex Steam railway departs from Tenterden. The White Lion Pub, dating back to the 1600's is worth a visit.

From Tenterden we will drive through the beautiful Weald of Kent, often known as the 'Garden of England', travelling through historic villages and towns towards Chartwell

On route we can stop at a traditional pub for lunch or you can lunch at the cafe at Chartwell. My favourite pub en route is The Three Chimneys in Frittenden, dating back to the 1500's. Duck as you enter!

Arriving at Chartwell, we will tour Churchill's home, still much the same as he left it. The Walled Garden, The Rose Garden and his Studio are also included. If you have time and the weather is agreeable, we can walk in the extensive grounds.
